Kayakers Keeping Rescue Crews Busy
Posted on Wednesday, April 30th, 2008 at 3:04 am
An explosion in the popularity of kayaking is keeping the Coast Guard busy.
With the increase in the number of kayakers on the nation’s lakes, rivers, and bays, the Coast Guard and other marine search-and-rescue groups are being kept increasingly busy. They are so busy now that many people are calling for kayakers to take boat safety classes.
According to John Fetterman of the Maine Marine Patrol and president of the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, kayakers represent the greatest risk in the recreational boating community. In addition, they’ve become a huge drain on the resources of rescue teams.

Police Appreciate Cell Phone Calls
Posted on Friday, April 18th, 2008 at 6:04 am
Police officers frequently rely on residents of an area for assistance when it comes to reporting crimes. Traditionally, this was done via landlines. Now though, cell phones have made assisting police much simpler. The average citizen walking down the street can serve as a community watchdog who contacts the police if a situation warrants it.
Local law enforcement officers have said, increasingly, that they appreciate calls from observant citizens. Cell phones have made communication between police and callers easier. They can be particularly important when time is of the essence, like in the event of an accident.
Cell phones are particularly appreciated by emergency responders in the event of snowmobile or ATV accidents. These accidents typically take place far from landlines that can be used to call for help. Cell phones have been used to call in the majority of snowmobile accidents this season.
