Posted on Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008 at 3:12 am

The Green Bay Police Department has begun a new program to increase pressure on people not to drive drunk. The program will have police officers increasing their patrol in certain areas during the night hours because Wisconsin law does not permit sobriety check points.

The Nightheat program received a funding award from Mothers against Drunk Driving (MADD). Through Nightheat the funding award has been used to increase police patrols.

Switzerland Increases Safety Measures After Last Year’s Accidents

Posted on Thursday, December 4th, 2008 at 2:12 am

The Swiss government has raised the ski lift safety regulations in response to the worst ski lift accidents experienced during last year’s ski season.

The accidents from January were the worst since 1999. In 1999, hurricane-strength winds blew a tree across the gondola track which injured three and illed 2 people. The January accidents involved two separate ski resorts and had completely different accident types.

The Alpine ski resort Grindelwald has replaced its cabling following a derailing last January that was the result of near hurricane force winds. Another accident in February at a nearby ski resort derailed a chair lift. It has been reported that 20 people had to be evacuated from that one accident.

The accidents last winter left one German skier dead.
