The Lakeland Health Care Center in Elkhorn has been adversely affected by the winter with two accidents in their parking lot so far. Both involved nurses slipping and falling in the parking lot.

A Nevada jury has awarded a record $2.5 million to the family of a woman who died of cancer, following a missed diagnosis by her doctor.

Elisa Sanchez was only 24 years-old when she first went to her doctor with symptoms of rectal bleeding and blood in her stools.  Sanchez made several visits to Dr. Steven Lampinen over the course of 7 months, but was diagnosed only with hemorrhoids.

After being taken to the University Medical Center in Las Vegas, it was then determined that Sanchez in fact had aggressive colon and rectal cancer.  As a result of the cancer, Sanchez died in 2007 at the age of 27.

Sanchez's family sued the doctor and his nurse for missing the diagnosis of cancer after repeated examinations. The suit claimed medical neglience on the part of the doctor, leading to the wrongful death of Sanchez.

The $2.5 million malpractice verdict is believed to be among the largest in Nevada history.
