360 million eggs recalled for salmonella

Posted on Friday, August 20th, 2010 at 3:31 am

An egg recall was issued on August 13th for 228 million eggs from three Wright County egg farms.  Today, the recall has expanded to include all five Wright County egg farms and 360 million eggs.  The initial recall came after several reported cases of salmonella food poisoning.  Salmonella is a type of bacteria that gets into the gastrointestinal tract and causes food poisoning.  The expanded recall comes after epidemiologic investigators recently determined that the salmonella could be traced to all five farms.

The eggs being recalled were shipped to wholesalers and distribution centers in several states across the county on May 16th.  Reports of food poisoning related to the eggs are clustered in Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, Nevada, North Carolina, Texas and Wisconsin.

Consumers who believe they have purchased the eggs should not consume them, and instead return them to where they purchased them for a refund.

Fresh Express ‘Veggie Lovers Salad’ recalled

Posted on Friday, August 13th, 2010 at 12:52 am

The bagged salad maker, Fresh Express, and the USDA have announced the recall of 2,825 cases of Fresh Express’ “Veggie Lovers Salad”.  The recall comes after bacteria was found in a bag of the salad in Ohio.

The product being recalled has a product code 1208 and a use-by date of August 10th.  The recalled product has been distributed in stores throughout Wisconsin, so the USDA urges that if you have purchased this product, you should avoid consuming it and throw it out.

The bacteria found in one bag is called listeria monocytogenes and can cause fever, nausea, diarrhea, and muscle aches.  Most healthy adults and children will rarely become ill from this type of bacteria, however it can have more serious affects on pregnant women and adults with weakened immune systems.

This is the third recall Fresh Express has made in the past three months.  The other two recalls involved the presence of E. coli and salmonella.
