Man arrested for 8th drunk driving offense

Posted on Wednesday, December 28th, 2011 at 7:33 pm

A Minneapolis man was arrested after a high speed chase in Clark County last week for his eighth drunk driving offense.

The 47 year-old man took a Wisconsin State Patrol trooper and sheriff’s deputies on a chase, reaching speeds of 110 mph, for nearly half an hour through rural Wisconsin. Officers laid down tire spikes to stop the intoxicated driver who refused to stop when law enforcement attempted to pull him over for speeding on Highway 29.

He is currently in the Clark County jail on charges of driving while intoxicated, fleeing from police, speeding, and driving with a revoked license.

NTSB recommends cellphone ban

Posted on Tuesday, December 20th, 2011 at 5:03 pm

The National Transportation Safety Board recommended last week that states ban all cellphone and other portable electronics use while driving, including hands-free as well as handheld devices. The only exception would be GPS systems and cellphones in emergency situations.

Fatal accidents caused by distracted drivers, like the multi-car pileup that occurred in Missouri last year, are examples the board has cited to support its proposed ban. A 19 year-old driver sent 11 text messages in 11 minutes before the crash, which killed him and a 15 year-old.

While the NTSB does not have enforcement power, federal regulators as well as state and congressional lawmakers carefully consider its recommendations.

Freak elevator accident kills woman

Posted on Wednesday, December 14th, 2011 at 5:55 pm

This morning a 41 year-old woman was killed in Manhattan when an elevator malfunctioned and trapped her between the doors and the elevator car. According to a report, the woman was on the first floor of an office building at around 10 am when the accident occurred.

Two witnesses inside the elevator watched on as the elevator began to quickly ascend with the woman still trapped. They were taken to the hospital for trauma.

The New York City Department of Buildings will investigate the cause of the accident. An inspection from this summer reveals that a defect was found in one of the elevators.

Our deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of the victim.

Toxic substances found in fruit juices

Posted on Tuesday, December 6th, 2011 at 6:26 pm

Dangerous levels of inorganic arsenic, a carcinogen, and lead have been found in apple and fruit juices as a result of an investigation by Consumer Reports.

10% of juice sampled from five different brands had levels of inorganic arsenic that exceeded federal drinking water standards of 10 parts per billion. There is currently no federal arsenic or lead limitations in juices. One in four juices tested had levels of lead higher than federal drinking water standards as well.

Inorganic arsenic can cause lung, bladder, and skin cancer.

The FDA, however, claims that the arsenic in fruit juices are organic and “essentially harmless” despite Consumer Reports’ findings.
