Fond du Lac company fined for dust explosion

Posted on Thursday, February 23rd, 2012 at 8:49 pm

OSHA has fined a Fond du Lac milk plant $72,000 for a dust explosion that occurred last summer.

An investigation into the explosion resulted in three safety violations, including a willful violation for combustible dust hazards. Last August, the plant, which converts liquid whey into whey protein concentrated powders, was evacuated after a small fire and explosion occurred in a machine. Heavy smoke filled the five-story plant.

However, the company challenges the violations, stating that an explosion never happened but rather a small piece of milk product started to smoulder and created smoke. Previous OSHA inspections have yielded 52 violations at the company’s Wisconsin plants.

Sex offender arrested in Vernon County

Posted on Thursday, February 16th, 2012 at 8:38 pm

A registered sex offender was arrested this week in Vernon County for violating his parole.

The 26 year-old man was forced to register as a sex offender after he plead guilty to second-degree child sexual assault in 2007. He was originally charged with five counts of sexual assault of a child after authorities believed he abused boys and girls 9 to 11 years-old for several years.

He served three years in prison and must wear a GPS bracelet as part of his parole. The man was arrested again after the Wisconsin Department of Corrections determined he violated the boundaries set on his GPS bracelet.

Dog owner cited for on-air attack

Posted on Friday, February 10th, 2012 at 8:36 pm

The owner of the Argentine mastiff that attacked a Denver news anchor on the air has been cited by animal control. He was issued citations for violating a leash law and for not having the dog properly vaccinated.

Last week the anchor had the dog, its owner, and a firefighter who had rescued the dog the day before from an icy lake on her show. When she knelled down at the end of the segment to get closer to the dog, the three year-old, 85 pound animal lunged and bit her on the face.

She was taken to the hospital where she underwent reconstructive surgery. She is expected to return to work in a few weeks.

Birth control pill error could lead to unintented pregnancy

Posted on Thursday, February 2nd, 2012 at 7:03 pm

A mix up with hormonal birth control pills and placebos could cause women to become unintentionally pregnant. Pfizer has issued a recall of nearly a million birth control pills under the Lo/Ovral-28 brand and its generics, norgestrel and ethinyl estradiol.

The mix up could cause the contraception to become significantly weakened, posing a pregnancy risk in users. A 32 year-old woman from Georgia has recently filed a lawsuit against Pfizer after she became pregnant while taking birth control pills.

The error is not believed to cause any health risks to the babies should a pregnancy occur. Women who believe they have a defective package should begin using non-hormonal contraceptives immediately.
