On Saturday, a 95-year-old woman became the first person to die as a result of a car accident in Shawano since 2003.
Hazel Paulson was riding as a passenger in Carole Scharr’s car when the accident occurred. Scharr failed to yield right-of-way and was hit by an oncoming car. She and the other car’s driver suffered minor injuries, but the elderly Paulson had to be flown to a nearby trauma center, where she later died.
The Shawano Police Department concluded that alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
While it is not always possible to avoid a car crash, sometimes taking extra precautions can save lives. Our hearts go out to Hazel Paulson’s friends and family.
