Settlement reached in anthrax wrongful death lawsuit
Posted on Tuesday, November 1st, 2011 at 3:03 am
A settlement has been reached in the wrongful death lawsuit between the U.S. government and the widow of a man who died during the 2001 anthrax attacks.
The widow originally filed the suit in 2003, claiming the government was to blame because it was negligent in safely securing the anthrax disease at a military laboratory. In 2008, the FBI concluded that an Army scientist was responsible for mailing athrax-laced letters to media outlets and government officials.
Her husband was a tabloid photo editor and was the first to die from the attacks when a letter was mailed to the publishing office of the National Enquirer. Five people died and seventeen fell ill from the letters.
Aircraft safely lands in suburban tree

Emergency responders are describing the plane crash as "miraculous" after a father and son on board a Cessna 172 walked away from the crash after it landed in a tree in the backyard of a home.
The father, who was flying the plane, says he was trying to make an emergency landing at a nearby airport but could not make it there in time. The man and his young son are in the hospital in stable condition. Local police and firefighters are amazed that the plane did not crash into a house or catch on fire on impact.
An investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board will be conducted to find the cause of the crash.

Woman faced with nursing home abuse accusations
Posted on Tuesday, October 11th, 2011 at 4:38 am
An assistant at a nursing home has been accused of hitting a 93 year-old patient in the head numerous times.
The patient told a social worker that the assistant hit her in the head every time she came in to care for her. The blows to the head have left a large bruise on the patient. The 38 year-old female assistant denies these accusations.
A judge sentenced the woman to anger management classes, counseling, and 40 hours of community service after her initial charges of felony intentional abuse and causing bodily harm were dropped to a misdemeanor charge of negligence.

Over a dozen die from listeria outbreak
Posted on Wednesday, September 28th, 2011 at 8:35 am
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have stated that thirteen people have died due to consuming listeria-contamined cantaloupe grown at Jensen Farms. More than seventy people who have fallen ill are confirmed to have contracted listeriosis from the fruit in more than eighteen states. Those numbers are predicted to rise since listeriosis can take weeks to develop in the body.
A federal investigation at Jensen Farms in Colorado is looking into the cause of the contamination. It will look at possible water or animal contamination and the companie's harvesting practices.
Listeriosis has a 25% fatality rate, though those with compromised immune systems like young children and elderly adults are more vulnerable. Families affected by the outbreak have begun filing lawsuits against Jensen Farms and their local grocery stores.

Volkswagen issues recall
Posted on Monday, September 19th, 2011 at 9:24 am
30,294 Volkswagen Jetta sedans are being recalled after several people claimed to have burned their legs on extended exhaust pipes. Volkswagen will begin recalling 2011-2012 Jetta models this November and will inspect and replace the exhaust pipe tips for free.
An investigation in August lead Volkswagen of America Inc. to discover that stainless steal exhaust tips were installed on Jettas after importation, which causes the pipes to protrude out further than original factory-installed exhaust pipes. Unexpected people walking near affected Jettas are at risk of burns, especially if the car has been on and running for some time.

Virgina family awarded $2.4mil in wrongful death suit
Posted on Wednesday, September 14th, 2011 at 7:39 am
A wrongful death lawsuit brought against a Virginia sheriff and city jail physician by the family of a deceased 46 year-old man resulted in the jury awarding the prosecutors $2.4 million in damages.
The family claims the jail's physician failed to give the man his seizure medication for at least ten days and ignored his complaints of severe chest, abdominal, and side pain. Witnesses say that the man spent most of his time in his cell, kneeled over in pain. A health employee took x-rays of his back and sides, but not his chest. Medical experts for both the prosecutors and defense say the man died from untreated pneumonia.
The man was in jail after he suffered a seizure while driving and crashed into a house. He was charged with property damage and driving with a suspended license.
Wisconsin student charged with sexual assault

A 19 year-old University of Wisconsin-La Crosse student plead no contest today to first-degree charges of sexual assault after sodomizing a fellow student last fall in the dorms. The judge did not give the man prison time, but instead will dismiss the charge if the student stays out of trouble for two years, finishes 80 hours of community service, and writes a letter of apology to the victim.
He was also charged with misdemeanor battery and, with this charge, he will be on probation for two years with six months in a county jail with work release and six months of electronic monitoring, mediation, conseling, and restitution. The assailant and the victim, both freshman, have voluntarily left UW-L.

Plane crashes in residential neighborhood
Posted on Wednesday, August 31st, 2011 at 7:58 am
A light plane being flown by a student pilot crashed into a house Monday afternoon in Santa Monica. The man was practicing landings and take offs at the Santa Monica
Airport when he crashed just a third of a mile away from the runway. Federal investigators are now looking into the accident to find out what caused the pilot to crash the single-engine Cessna.
The airplane was bent in two and the wings were torn off, but miraculously the pilot survived and only suffered a broken leg. No one on the ground was injured. Painters working on the house helped the man out of the plane and used a garden hose to put out some small flames.
