Preventing Drowning

In 2004, 3,308 people were the victims of unintentional fatal drowning. That is an average of roughly 9 people dying each day. Non-fatal drowning can cause brain damage. Factors that contribute to drowning include a lack of supervision and barriers such as pool fencing, swimming in natural water settings like rivers, lakes, or oceans, and boating. Alcohol use is a leading cause of unintentional drowning in adults and adolescents.
