Safe Cosmetics Act introduced in Congress

Posted under Uncategorized

A bill was recently introduced in Congress that would allow the FDA to regulate the cosmetics industry, an industry that has long been self-regulating. The creators of this bill hope to prevent consumers from using unsafe cosmetics products that could affect their health.

Cosmetic products have long been found to contain usafe chemicals, such as metals, formaldehyde, and triclosan, that are harmful to the health of humans. If the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2011 is passed, it will force cosmetic industries to cease their use of chemicals that have been linked to cancer and birth defects. It will also require that cosmetic products be tested for safety and recalled by the FDA if they do not meet standards.

A bill similar to this one was introduced in 2010, however, it did not pass because smaller cosmetics companies did not have the funding to comply with its regulations. The Safe Cosmetics Act of 2011 has made changes to make smaller companies, which have often pushed for safer products, able to compy with the regulations.
