A 19-year-old man from Appleton was recently awarded $850,000 in a wrongful death lawsuit that he filed against his stepfather for the 2009 killing of his mother.
The man's 40-year-old stepfather shot and killed his mother on April 17, 2009 outside of their home. Although the stepfather claimed that the shooting had been accidental, he was convicted of intentional homicide and sentenced to life in prison in May 2010. The man filed a wrongful death lawsuit against his father six days after the shooting, citing emotional distress and loss of emotional and financial support with the loss of his mother.
A judge from an Outagamie County court awarded the 19-year-old man $850,000 for punitive damages and wrongful death.
